We will return to India Gate today, say students despite warnings

Hundreds of people, mostly college students, have decided to gather near India Gate on Monday despite the authorities’ move to an the agitation by using tear gas shells and mounting baton charge.

Protesters have been demanding stringent steps from the government to ensure the safety of women and death penalty for the six accused in the gang rape case.
Many Metro stations were closed and roads were barricaded on Sunday. But it failed to prevent protesters from staging demonstration. The crowd at India Gate increased to many thousands by Sunday afternoon.

“Force won’t stop us and our revolution to provide justice to the gang rape victim. We will protest till the government decides to launch new laws for strict action against rapists,” said Shalini Singh, a Patel Nagar resident.

Some demanded immediate execution of the rapists, whether by hanging or being burnt alive. Protesters also appeared relentless in their determination to reach Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Sunday was the second successive day that police resorted to using tear gas shells and water cannons.
