Delhi citizens would now be able to get more accurate short-term weather updates with a first-of-its-kind Doppler radar that would enable the weather department to provide quick and area-specific information.

.
The C-Band polarimetric radar, that comes in addition to an S-Band radar already operating in Palam office, is expected to offer significant improvements in rainfall estimation, precipitation classification, data quality and weather hazard detection.
It was inaugurated by Minister of Earth Sciences Ashwani Kumar here on Sunday. It is dedicated to bettering accuracy and forecasting of weather.

The multi-purpose radar is expected to radically improve short-term weather forecasting in the national capital region, with more accurate information about impending rain, hail or dust-storms in the NCR and would help improve daily operations .

“The difference between C and S Band is that clarity is much more sharper with the C-Band, and it is for smaller areas, and has ability to absorb information and send it out very quickly. We would be able to know what will happen in the next 15 minutes to two hours, “Kumar said.

Also elaborating on the government's long-term initiatives in the field of Science, Kumar said the government had in-principle sanctioned Rs 5,000 crore as part of an ambitious initiative on supercomputing.” In 2005, India and China were more or less similarly placed in this field but in six years time India is lagging behind.

"The ambitious project for which a concrete project report is on the anvil will boost India's ocean and air-borne strategic advantage," he said.

Mountain meteorology
The government is also pursuing improvements in mountain meteorology to improve weather prediction capabilities for the Himalayan range and North East, initiatives that would help greater security of life and livelihood by accurately monitoring phenomenon like flash floods.

Aviation meteorology, and modernisation of airports, is also being pursued, he added.
