Andhra Pradesh bags $15 bn Google project with Rs 22k-cr goodies

Hyderabad: Tech giant Google on Tuesday announced India’s largest AI data centre campus and new green energy infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh's coastal city Visakhapatnam with an investment outlay of $15 billion over five years from 2026-2030.

This investment of approximately $15 billion is Google’s largest investment in India to date. Google’s AI hub in Visakhapatnam comprises gigawatt-scale data centre operations, supported by a robust subsea cable network and clean energy, to drive the most demanding AI workloads in India.

It will be brought to life in close collaboration with ecosystem partners including Adani Group's joint venture, AdaniConneX and Airtel. “We are very pleased to announce a new gigawatt-scale AI hub in Visakhapatnam the largest AI hub we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world outside of the United States,” said Google Cloud Global CEO Thomas Kurien at Bharat AI Shakti, event hosted by Google in New Delhi, and a pre-event to the India-AI Impact Summit 2026 on Tuesday in the presence of Railways & IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and IT minister Nara Lokesh.

Kurien added that this facility will be part of a global network of AI centres spread across 12 countries, with Visakhapatnam emerging as the flagship hub outside the US. Additionally, Google Cloud plans to transform Visakhapatnam into a global connectivity hub by landing its subsea cable infrastructure in the city. This will be integrated into Google’s global subsea network, making Visakhapatnam a major digital backbone for India connecting multiple regions and strengthening the country’s technological ecosystem.

Google and Alphabet CEO, Sundar Pichai also took to social media to announce the new investment. “Great to speak with India PM Narendra Modi to share our plans for the first-ever Google AI hub in Visakhapatnam, a landmark development. This hub combines gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure. Through it we will bring our industry-leading technology to enterprises and users in India, accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country,” said Sundar Pichai in a social media post.

Nara Lokesh said that the initiative is designed to attract domestic and international investors, strengthen partnerships with global technology leaders, and establish Andhra Pradesh as a model for responsible and inclusive AI development.

The project will also see co-investment in new transmission lines, clean energy generation and innovative energy storage systems in Andhra Pradesh. This will not only support the data centre’s operations but also enhance the resilience and capacity of India's electricity grid.
