<p>The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has named former banker Madhabi Puri Buch as its new chairperson, making her the first woman and first private-sector leader to take the helm of the capital markets regulator.</p>.<p>Buch will head Sebi for an initial period of three years, the Department of Personnel and Training said in a notification on Monday. The former CEO and MD of ICICI Securities Limited will replace Ajay Tyagi, whose term came to an end on Tuesday. </p>.<p>Some industry watchers said she was a great fit for the job.</p>.<p>“We have a good feeling that the industry, in particular, would flourish under her guidance and take advantage of her long experience working with renowned corporates and leading brands,” said Prem Prakash, the co-founder and chief executive officer of CapitalVia Global Research.</p>.<p>Buch is an alumna of St Stephen’s College and has a management degree from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. Buch served as a whole-time member on Sebi’s board from 2017 through October 2021, during which she handled market regulation and other matters.</p>.<p>She has also headed private equity firm Greater Pacific Capital’s Singapore office. </p>.<p>A Sebi chair is typically appointed for a maximum of five years or until the person turns 65, whichever is earlier.</p>.<p><strong>Check out latest DH videos here</strong></p>
