RWAs campaign to highlight civic issues in Bellandur

To highlight infrastructure issues such as bad roads, water supply and garbage clearance in the Bellandur ward, Residents' Welfare Associations (RWAs) on Sunday organised a painting competition and bike campaigns.

In July, over 60 RWAs came together to create the 'Bellandur Development Resolution 2018', a comprehensive plan to develop the ward, which they submitted to the area representatives, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and the state government for implementation.

Months later, the residents claim that the authorities have done nothing to improve the conditions.

"Bellandur sprawls over 27 square kilometres and is one of the largest wards," a resident pointed out. "It collects more than Rs 220 crore in tax. But water and drainage are non-existent to majority of the residents."

Garbage remains a serious problem in the ward, besides the nightmarish situation of its lakes catching fire and choking over sewage and encroachment.

"The civic body shows no intent to solve our problems, forcing us to hold a series of events to highlight the apathy," the resident added.

Over 50 children produced artwork around the themes of roads, mobility, water and general infrastructure, highlighting the pitiable condition of the ward. Residents also held an awareness campaign on bikes around Sarjapur Road and other areas under the Bellandur ward.

Some of the demands of the RWAs include speeding up the underground drainage work for the 2019 enablement, implementing the garbage micro plan, holistic rejuvenation of the lakes in consonance with the 2016 monitoring committee report, and restructuring the ward's governance and administration.
