A mob brutally assaulted a 20-year-old security guard managing traffic near the Panathur railway gate when he stopped vehicles on one lane and let the other one free.

The Varthur police said Sharman Mondal, an employee of Classic Security Services, was appointed by the IT companies since the road is narrow and traffic on the opposite lane had to be stopped in order to allow vehicles to go freely on the other side.

Mondal stopped an SUV coming from the Outer Ring Road to make way for the vehicle in the opposite lane.

Seven to eight people emerged from the vehicle and began thrashing Mondal. The group also assaulted a passerby trying to stop them from thrashing Mondal. The guard was bleeding from his face, head and eyes, which were swollen. He was rushed to Sakra Hospital and was later shifted from there to ESI Hospital, Indiranagar.

The police have obtained the SUV's registration number and the identity of the men in the vehicle. They are waiting for Mondal to recover to record his statement.
