Assailants robbed and strangled a 59-year-old man to death in Yelahanka New Town on Friday night.

Venkatapathi, a landlord, left home in his car, but did not return, prompting anxious family members to register a missing person complaint with the Sampigehalli police.

The murder came to light when a few passersby found Venkatapathi's body lying on the roadside and alerted the police. The Yelahanka New Town police identified the victim with the physical description given by the family.

Family members, who rushed to the spot and confirmed the deceased as Venkatapathi, said four rings, a bracelet and a gold chain along with a Rado watch were missing.

The police also found his car abandoned a kilometre away, from where they found the body. They suspect it to be a murder for gain and have filed a case of murder and robbery.

Venkatapathi owns a few acres of land in Sampigehalli worth several crores, the police said.
