Soon, facial recognition trackers at BBMP offices

Last Updated 02 January 2019, 19:23 IST

Now, brand new facial recognition systems are to monitor employees' attendance at the BBMP head office.

In a first, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is introducing three facial recognition systems at a cost of Rs 20,000 each. With this, the BBMP becomes the first government office in the state to introduce facial recognition software.

Across its offices in the city, the civic body is using an Aadhar-linked biometric system at the moment. The BBMP is planning to use the the new facial recognition systems to track the attendance of employees on a pilot basis.

“There are a few glitches in the current biometric system. For instance, the number of hours an employee is at the office cannot be tracked. Hence, we will install the new facial recognition systems for attendance, which will be linked to the biometric system,” said a senior BBMP official.

“The new system will give us all the details about the employees' time spent in the office. The latest technology is better as the process is faster than the existing one,” he added.

According to another BBMP employee, the facial recognition system will transfer the data to the cloud storage after identifying the employee's face. "It will link the data with the employee's registered code. The employee's entry and exit timings are transferred to the cloud storage instantly," he said.

However, for now, the new smart attendance system will be applicable only to the permanent staff at the civic body's headquarters.
