A 30-year-old software engineer committed suicide at his paying guest accommodation in Electronics City on Monday.

The deceased, Sethu Kumar, was a resident of Chennai and worked for an MNC in Electronics City. Police suspect he could have taken the extreme step as he had run into debt.

According to police, Kumar was staying at Sri Vidhya Vinayaka Gents PG in Neeladri Layout, sharing his room with two friends. On Monday, Kumar told his roommates that he was not feeling well and stayed back at the PG.

The incident came to light when Kumar's roommates returned to the room and he didn't answer the door. They peeped through the window and found him hanging from the ceiling. The roommates informed the owner who alerted the police. The Electronics City police shifted the body for post-mortem. They ruled out any foul play.

Inquiries revealed that Kumar had borrowed from his friends and was unable to repay them. Kumar’s family members, in their statement to police, said he had borrowed Rs 1.5 lakh but was unable to pay off, due to which he could have resorted to the extreme step.

The police, however, said Kumar drew a salary of Rs 50,000 and committing suicide over Rs 1.5 lakh was questionable.

Kumar didn't leave any suicide note. The police have recovered his personal belongings and are investigating further to ascertain the exact reason behind the suicide.
