Inaugurating the helpline, Energy Minister Shobha Karandlaje on Saturday, said women should be encouraged to become financially independent so as to make them more empowered.

The Corporation which offers guidance, facilitates loans and training in different skills will operate the toll free helpline 1800 425 9550 from 10 am to 5.30 pm every day.

KSWDC Chairman Sarojini Bharadwaj said the corporation was planning to improve several existing programmes including the popular Udyogini scheme, where women are given training and helped to obtain a loan to start small businesses. The loans also come with subsidies and these subsidies are likely to be increased soon.

Another ambitious plan for the Corporation is to identify transexuals in the State and to impart skills for self-employment. The organisation will also give a monthly allowance of Rs 400 for transgenders over 40 years of age. Once identified as woman by the district committees which include two doctors, they will be issued ID cards to avail the benefits. These include loan facilities, training pension and housing.

Similarly, devadasis in the State will also be eligible for free houses. As many as  2,500 hou- ses were constructed in the year 2009-10, while 5,000 houses will be constructed in the year 2010-11.
