Police had to resort to a cane charge to stop the scuffling between party groups.  Though the election turned out to be one more feather in the cap of 29-year-old Mausam Benazir Noor,  the Congress MP from Maldah North who is the youngest to enter Parliament, clashes broke out once AICC observers announced her victory in the elections for the post of president on Monday.  Noor, considered a Rahul Gandhi pick, fled and was eventually escorted into a police van.

An agitated Noor vowed to "report everything" to Rahul and emplaned for New Delhi on Tuesday with a CD of the violence, allegedly let loose by the supporters of rival Congress MP Deepa Dasmunshi, wife of the party leader P R Dasmunshi.

Noor, believed to be close to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, belongs to the family of former Railway minister A B A Gani Khan Choudhury.  Her victory is believed to have upset the calculations of Dasmunshi,a known Mamata baiter.
