City's green cover, a price for development

Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa in his written reply to MLC Jaggesh in the Legislative Council, on Thursday, said the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had planted 3,13,048 saplings during 2010-11 to compensate for the loss of  green cover. The Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) too had planted 1,32,950 saplings between 2006-07 and 2010-11.

The Chief Minister, who also holds Bangalore Development portfolio, said the BBMP had spent Rs 7.13 crore to plant 3,13,048 saplings in the past one year and Rs 4.73 crore for their maintenance.

While, the BDA had spent Rs 64.23 lakh to plant 1,32,950 saplings in the past five years and Rs 2.50 crore towards their maintenance.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited  has spent about Rs 32 crore towards repair of roads that were damaged due to Namma Metro work.

Replying to a question by MLC Srinath on road repairs, Yeddyurappa said nearly Rs 8 crore had been spent to rebuild roads on Reach 1, between Byappanahalli and Chinnaswamy stadium.

Under Reach 2, a stretch of road between Leprosy Hospital on Magadi Road and Nayandahalli on Mysore Road has been repaired at a cost of Rs 6 crore. Also, the road between Yeshwantpur Railway Station and  Mohammaden Block, Mahakavi Kuvempu Road, Mahalakshmi Station, Soap Factory Station under Reach 3, have been repaired at a cost of Rs 15 crore. An additional Rs 3 crore has been spent on repairing Kanakapura Road and R V Road, under Reach 4, said the Chief Minister.

Illegal hoardings

To a question raised by MLC K Pratap Chandra Shetty on rampant illegal hoardings, Yeddyurappa said the BBMP had removed 188 of the 259 illegal advertisement hoardings identified in the City. 

The Palike has collected Rs 11.13 crore as revenue from advertisements and Rs 8.36 lakh as fine, he added.
