EC transfers top officials in Bengal

Last Updated 29 March 2011, 18:10 IST

Malda District Magistrate Promal Samanta, East Midnapore Superintendent of Police Ajit Sarkar and Deputy Inspector General of Police (Mindapore range) Anil Kumar were transferred with immediate effect and had been replaced by Rajesh Singh, K Jayraman and Vineet Goyel respectively.

Sources in the state secretariat said the order was issued following a meeting between the chief secretary and West Bengal chief electoral officer Sunil Gupta.
Both Vineet Goyel and Neeraj Singh were posted in Kolkata Police as Joint Commissioner (Traffic)  and Joint Commissioner (Administration) respectively. Neeraj Singh will take charge as Deputy Inspector General of Police (Murshidabad range). The post was lying vacant.

When asked the reason for the sudden transfer of the top officials, Ghosh said: “The order was issued as per the instruction of the EC.”  This order comes on the heel of the transfer of the city police commissioner Gautam Chakraborty who was considered very close to Bhattacherjee.

Earlier, when the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) S Y  Quraishi was here last week, he said the EC was keeping a watch on three-four officers, including police superintendents and district magistrate, in poll-bound West Bengal for “not working neutrally. We have three to four officers of different levels under observation for not working neutrally. These officers include police superintendent and district magistrates,” he said.
