Early morning 'shock' at vegetable market

Last Updated 28 June 2011, 17:10 IST

The very incident triggered a snap stir by vendors who staged a rasta roko, disrupting traffic on the road for sometime.

One of the cement poles that had been laid to give permanent power supply to a mall coming up near M L Somasundaram Circle, uprooted from the bottom in the early hours, thus falling beside a lady selling vegetables. A few buyers too had a brush with death.

The vendors, under the leadership of Dalit Sangarsh Samiti (DSS) leaders Shambulingaswamy and Naga, staged a road block squatting in the middle of the road for a couple of minutes from 11.30 am. They alleged that the pole of sub-standard quality was the reason for developing crevice causing its fall. The protesters demanded the authorities concerned to take steps to stop such incidents in future.

Following an assurance from officers of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (Cesc), the agitators withdrew the stir.

The very incident assumes significance, after a similar incident in the recent past.
Six  poles on Bogadi Road  beside Kukkarahalli Lake had fallen, after a weak tree uprooted and fell on the power line.

The tree that fell on the line, initially caused crack in the pole standing nearby. Subsequently,  five othe poles in the line also crashed thus falling on moving vehicles.

Five of a family travelling in a car had a miraculous escape, followed by two two-wheeler riders and another car, who too had a similar experience.
