Rs 55 crore for road widening

Last Updated 18 August 2011, 19:26 IST

On the pretext of making way for signal-free corridors and wider stretches across the City, the Palike has taken up the plan to widen 10 roads this year. While most roads have been in the news for their narrow width, two new roads appear to have been added to ‘help’ BJP’s political bigwigs.

Sources in the BBMP said while the widening of the road from Abbigere to Lakshmipura appears to have been inserted in the budget to help Mayor Sharadamma have a smooth ride, widening of the stretch between Chikkabanavara and Ganigarahalli has been taken up on the insistence of Dasarahalli MLA Muniraju, who was instrumental in getting the Mayor elected.

Other major infrastructure projects which have found a place in Budget 2011-12 are mostly the spillover works from the previous fiscal.

Major projects

*Five flyovers/grade separators at Banashankari temple-Ring Road junction, Sony World junction at Koramangala, Maramma Circle in Malleswaram, Chord Road and Vatal Nagaraj Road at Rajajinagar.

* Seven underpasses and seven signal-free corridors.

* Construction of flyovers, underpasses, railway underbridges/overbridges, remodelling stormwater drains and providing water supply to newly added areas under Nagarothana scheme, with an allocation of Rs 250 crore from the State government.

* The 13th Finance Commission allocation of Rs 173.95 crore for 2011-12 to be used for construction of vehicle parking lots and junction improvements, apart from solid waste management works and for roads and bridges.
