AP, Bengal top list on crimes against women

A total of 2,13,585 incidents of crime against women were reported in the country in 2010 as compared to the 2,03,804 cases in 2009.

Andhra Pradesh has topped the list for a second consecutive year, with 27,244 cases of crimes against women registered in 2010, which accounts for 12.8 per cent of the all India total. In 2009, 25,569 such cases were registered according to the NCRB. In West Bengal, 26,125 cases of crimes against women were registered, forming 12.2 per cent of such cases registered across the country. In 2009, West Bengal with 7.6 percent share of population accounted for nearly 11.4 percent of total crime against women by registering 23,307 cases.

Compared to 2009, country’s largest state UP witnessed a decline in the number of cases registered in 2010 for crimes against women. In UP 20,169 such cases were registered in 2010 against 23,254 in 2009. However, the state with 9.4 percent of total cases of crimes against women registered in India is at number three, next only to Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Karnataka comes ninth in the list of 28 states and 7 union territories, with 8,807 of such cases in 2010 and formed 4.1 per cent of the all India total.

Among the Union Territories, the maximum number of cases were registered in Delhi.
