Nail art has become a real rage among the youth and celebrities, says Shaili Dhagat, who details the intricacies involved in the art form

Art, as they say, knows no boundaries. It is not confined to any medium or style. Creativity can be expressed on a sheet of paper or on canvas or for that matter, even on nails.

The art of nail-painting is no longer staid or plain. It is an expression of an artist’s imagination and an exuberance of colour loaded in creative patterns — all taking shape on the nails.

The patterns could be anything — from that of rolling clouds or silvery showers to bright floral designs and motifs or geometric figures and marble. The choice depends on a client’s preference and taste. The intricacy of the pattern and the finesse is extremely important as the frame is limited to a finger nail.

This art form is slowly gaining recognition in India now, but has been evolving in the West for several years now. In the busy parts of Delhi, there are special parlours and studios dedicated to nail-art. Natural and French acrylic extensions, gel extensions, French and natural overlay, French in-fills, tip repair and permanent nail paint that last nearly a month, are popular choices among the youth.

Nail art could include the basic nail art, needle nail art, permanent nail art, Swarovski crystal art, flower design or any other pattern of one’s choice. A simple nail-art could cost you anything from Rs. 500 to Rs 1,200 onwards.

Sumer Khurana, a nail art expert with his own studio in Khan Market in South Delhi explains the reasons behind the increasing popularity of nail art, “Over the last two years, it has become immensely popular in India, especially in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. In the West, nail art has been around for  several years now. It is a misconception that it is only for those who want something ‘funky’. It is a highly artistic form, if it is done tastefully.”

It can make a huge fashion statement, giving a dramatic and final touch to one’s appearance as hands are easily noticed. “I have a team of trained staff, and there is an easy flow of clients who want to try out this new trend on their nails, especially for a function or a wedding,” he adds.

Nail art has caught up with young brides too. They get their fingers and toes done only for that special day. Many go for a pattern that matches their attire. The client makes a suggestion and the artist gives his/her opinion. The final pattern that takes shape is a happy combination of both.

Apart from creativity, an artistic bent of mind and an understanding of this art form, nail art requires precision, patience and neatness. Some aspects of creating a design involves technique while other aspects can be spontaneous and highly individualistic.
Designing an intricate pattern on a small frame is no small feat either. It is not just about painting but the complete regime for nail-care.

The tips are trimmed, cleaned up, massaged with cuticle oil and finally painted upon with a finesse that can be done only by an experienced artist. Says Shruti Malik, a student of Delhi University, “I have tried nearly all kinds of patterns. It certainly looks cool and this is a real rage ain college. I’ve noticed celebrities like Rihanna and Beyonce sporting crazy designs too. My friends also go for it, especially if there is a family celebration or a function in college. I have tried flowers, crystals, geometrical pattern and also the marble design on my nails!”
Well, who says that nails are just a hard and humble cover on our fingers. An artist can create patterns, turning them into a style statement. It is a refined form of art that has many takers now. So don’t ignore the urge to try something new and detailed, on your nails!
