Rain havoc in Hassan district

Electric cables snap; no power for the whole night

Heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorm, across the district from Monday evening to night battered the region with many trees getting uprooted and blowing away of roofs of several houses causing a lot of inconvenience to the people.

Several banana plants that were ready for harvesting were destroyed due to heavy rain at Halebeedu.
More than 200 plants in one acre of land belonging to Gurushantappa were destroyed. Many trees were uprooted and the road connecting a Dalit Colony in the village has turned into a slushy pool. A bullock cart got stuck in the slushy road and an excavating machine was used to lift it, the villagers said.

The situation was similar at Holenarsipur as hundreds of trees were uprooted due to strong winds. The sheet roof of a poultry farm of Syed Gayaz Pasha, Nasrutunnisa of Dodd Byagathahalli in the taluk was blown away and thousands of fowl were killed as the wall collapsed. Arecanut and coconut trees were uprooted and banana plantation was destroyed.

Some trees had reportedly fallen on the electric cables at Nagalapura, Huchanakoppalu, Hassan-Mysore road in Arkalgud and there was no power in these villages and surrounding areas.
Tahsildar V Manjunath visited the places and assessed the situation. He also assured suitable compensation to the affected.
