Last Updated 09 May 2012, 17:18 IST

Tulu is all set to enter eighth standard in the academic year.

Though there is demand for Tulu textbook—Tulu Yesal-3 in Dakshina Kannada, the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy has not received any indent from the Udupi DDPI for the Tulu Yesal -3 which will be textbook for those who have opted Tulu as optional language in eighth standrad.

Speaking to presspersons, Tulu Academy President Umanath A Kotian said that Dakshina Kannada DDPI has given indent for 13,000 textbooks for sixth standard, 14,000 for seventh standard and 4,800 for eighth standard.

“In Udupi, we have received 3,000 each for sixth and seventh stadnard. However, there was no demand for eighth standard textbooks.”

Tulu Yesal-1 and Tulu Yesal-2 which are taught in sixth and seventh standard had received good response in Udupi and Brahmavar.

The Government introduced Tulu as the third optional language for standard six in 2010-11. Tulu was introduced to standard seven in the last academic year. “The Academy will make all arrangements to supply the textbooks  to schools.

I have already spoken to Udupi DDPI on no demand for textbooks for eighth standard. There is a need to create awareness among the people and we will make an effort to change the mindset of the parents to encourage their wards to study Tulu as an optional subject.”

High demand

The Government through the Academy distributed 12,000 textbooks each for standard six and seven in the last academic year.

Highest demands for textbooks were in Belthangady, Bantwal, and Puttur education blocks where the academy distributed around 2,000 textbooks each.

When asked on reported shortage of teachers to teach Tulu language, Kotian said that there are enough teachers in Kannada medium schools to teach Tulu language.

Tulu is introduced as optional language in around 800 schools in Dakshina Kannada and 100 to 150 schools in Udupi district.

“If any school writes to us stating that they do not have teachers to teach Tulu language, the Academy will make arrangment for the appointment of honorary teachers.

The honorary teachers will be appointed with the help of local organisations. We have already held talks with DIET to help in appointing the honorary teachers,” he added.

Tulu Bhavan

On Tulu Bhavan, he said that the work will be completed within one-and-half years. “The work has started and is under progress.”
