<p>India Sunday paid homage to its first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, on his 48th death anniversary.<br /><br />President Pratibha Patil, Vice President Hamid Ansari and Congress president Sonia Gandhi paid floral tributes at Shanti Van, Nehru's memorial here.<br /><br />Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Urban Development Minister Kamal Nath were also present at the memorial, which was marked by an all religion prayer session.<br /><br />Nehru was born in Allahabad Nov 14, 1889. He died in Delhi May 27, 1964.<br /><br />One of the principal leaders of the Indian freedom struggle along with Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru became the first prime minister of the country after independence, a post which he held till his death. <br /></p>
