The body of a two-year-old girl was found near the railway tracks between Kanjurmarg and Bhandup stations in eastern suburban Mumbai today, railway police said.

Police suspects that the girl was an unwanted child due to which family members may have thrown her from the moving train yesterday morning.

Government Railway Police (GRP) officials received a call from a passenger on Sunday at around 2:30 pm, about seeing a girl lying in the weeds near the central railway slow track between two stations.

GRP officials reached the spot and sent her body to the nearby civic-run Rajawadi Hospital for postmortem.

Kurla GRP senior police inspector Shivaji Dhumal said that the girl could have been thrown by someone from a moving train in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

The police also searched the entire stretch of 3 km from Kanjurmarg to Bhandup, but did not find any conclusive evidence regarding the case.

However, no missing complaint report has been registered in any of the nearby police stations.

The postmortem conducted by Rajawadi Hospital stated in its report that the girl is two-year-old and died due to severe head injuries early on Sunday morning.

Also, one-and-a-half-inch skin of her forehead, which was missing, was eaten by a rat present at the spot, the report stated.

The police said that they were looking at the CCTV footage of every station from CST to Kanjurmarg to find out the person who boarded the train on Sunday morning with the girl.

The Kurla GRP has registered a case of murder against an unknown person.
