City boy bags gold at global astronomy olympiad

Arindam Bhattacharya, a student of four-year Supreme-Integrated School Programme at FIITJEE’s Bangalore Centre, along with two others won a Gold for India at the recently-concluded 17th International Astronomy Olympiad (IAO) held in South Korea.

Team India eventually finished with one gold and two silver medals.
The Olympiad is a science education event for students in the age group of 14 to 18 years. The competitors have to solve a range of problems that test their imagination, creativity and independent thinking.

IAO is held every year in the first two months of the astronomical autumn (September 22 to November 22) either at an observatory, scientific research centre or an institute of the participating countries.

The Olympiad is conducted by the Authorised National Representative (Astronomical) Organisation of the host country.

This year, over 100 candidates from 23 countries participated in the Olympiad.
