State leaders eye Cabinet berth

Last Updated 16 May 2009, 20:33 IST

Karnataka is likely to get not more than two cabinet posts.

Leaders such as Mallikarjuna Kharge, N Dharam Singh, M Veerappa Moily and K H Muniyappa are key contenders for the ministerial posts. Among members from the RS, S M Krishna, Union Minister of state for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes and AICC general secretary B K Hariprasad are likely to join the race.

The chances of Kharge becoming a cabinet minister is  bright as the party was said to have promised a cabinet post to him while fielding him from the Gulbarga seat. Through inducting him into the cabinet,  the party can also maintain the caste balance as he is one of the senior most Dalit leaders from the State. If Kharge manages the berth, he will be superseding Union Minister of State for National Highways K H Muniyappa for the post.

Krishna may eye for a cabinet berth from the Vokkaliga quota as the there are no other Vokkaliga leaders in either the Lok Sabha or the Rajya Sabha from the party. Senior leader Oscar Fernandes,  who is close to 10 Janpath, also will be a strong contender.  Veerappa Moily, who was dropped from the Congress Media Committee recently, may also try his best to get a ministerial berth.
