A molestation victim, who had set herself ablaze in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad town, died at a Delhi hospital on Saturday after battling for life for three days.
The 15-year-old victim, a student of class 9, had suffered 90 per cent burn injuries and had been admitted to a hospital in Delhi after her condition became critical.
The state government has ordered a magisterial probe into the incident and shunted the nearby police outpost in-charge for not taking prompt action when the girl’s family had lodged an FIR alleging that some youths had been molesting her for the past few days.
A large number of people from Moradabad town staged a demonstration on Saturday in protest against the incident and demanded action against the guilty police officers.
The girl, a resident of Civil Lines locality, was being harassed by a youth, identified as Danish from the same town, for the past few days. Her family members had tried to file a report but police remained apathetic.
The police finally lodged a report after the matter was reported in the local press but did not take any action against the alleged culprit. The family alleged that Danish tried to molest the girl again a few days ago.
He had also torn her clothes. Though the police arrested Danish but they allegedly exerted pressure on victim and her family to withdraw the complaint and settle the matter among themselves.
Apparently feeling humiliated, the teenaged girl poured kerosene oil over herself and set herself on fire.
She suffered extensive burn injuries before the family members could douse the flames.
Earlier also, UP girls have killed themselves following molestation and rape attempts. A few months ago, a girl had set herself ablaze after being gang raped in Deoria district. She died later at a hospital in Gorakhpur.
