Last Updated 26 May 2013, 20:48 IST

An elephant that could not climb up a pond after drinking water, was rescued by the forest officials at Valnur-Tyagathur near here on Sunday.

The wild jumbo was finding it difficult to climb up the tank in a plantation, belonging to Mustafa. Workers, who noticed it, immediately alerted their employer, who in turn informed the forest officials.

Forest personnel led by Achchappa, who rushed to the spot, observed that the tank’s bund was too steep making it difficult for the jumbo to climb. Later, they levelled the bund with the help of an earth mover and drove the elephant back into the forest.

Later, speaking to reporters, Gram Panchayat president Bhuvanendra complained that elephants are frequenting the village bordering the forest, but the forest personnel have failed to check this.

He urged the forest personnel to initiate measures to check the elephant menace.
A large number of people had gathered to watch the rescue operation.
