A sharpshooter involved in several cases of murder and attempt to murder has been arrested in north west Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh, police said on Saturday.

Harsimran, a resident of Shalimar Bagh, was held when he came to meet his parents at their house on Friday. He was wanted for killing his former gang leader Samunder and opening fire at Jose, former president of Shalimar Bagh RWA.

Jose was the RWA president before he was replaced by Harsimran’s mother Sukhbir Kaur. Harsimran started extorting money from hawkers and roadside venders while abusing his mother’s strong position in the area.

“The hawkers and venders did not dare to report against Harsimran, but Jose objected to his illegal acts,” said P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police (north west).

Harsimran decided to kill Jose, and stabbed him on January 23. He, along with his parents, vanished from the area after committing the crime.

Raids conducted

Regular raids were conducted at probable hideouts including relatives’ houses in Gurdaspur, Jalandhar and Amritsar in Punjab and Ruderpur in Uttarakhand. Harsimran’s parents kept on moving from one village to other, but eventually surrendered before a court due to regular raids.

“They were arrested for attack on Jose, but Harsimran remained fugitive,” Karunakaran added.

During the period of elopement, Harsimran contacted Samunder, a criminal who used to operate from outer Delhi’s Burari. “The gang had committed several crimes, for which Samunder owed money to his associates but he refused to pay them,” Karunakaran said.

To seek revenge, the gang members joined shot Samunder dead on April 28.
