Two separate incidents of miscreants attacking police constables on duty on Sunday night-Monday early morning has set alarm bells ringing as three more such attacks on the law enforcers were reported in the City in the last six days.

On Sunday night, a constable sustained head injuries in Banaswadi after three suspected Nigerian students attacked him, while two more constables were injured, one grievously, after a gang of six men assaulted them with lethal weapons for trying to rescue a truck driver whom they had robbed, in Mahadevapura police limits early Monday..

K Kumar, 58, police head constable, attached to Mahadevapura (Law & Order) unit, sustained severe injuries on his left hand when a gang of six attacked him near Silk Board Junction. Prabhakar, 35, police constable, was injured on the nose and lips after one of the gangsters hit him with a hollow brick.

“A two-wheeler rider told us that a gang was trying to rob a truck driver near Silk Board underpass around 12.30 am. We were nearby and went to the spot. They had robbed the truck driver and we managed to catch one of them, while five others fled. We informed the  police station,” K Kumar, who has more than 33 years of experience in the constabulary, told Deccan Herald.

The five youths soon returned on three bikes. “They saw us holding their friend and were furious. They brandished a weapon and slashed my left hand. One of them attacked Prabhakar, who was holding their friend, on his face. He had to let go the culprit. Grabbing the opportunity, three of them fled on bikes, while others ran away, leaving behind one,” Kumar added.

More forces were rushed to the spot and the injured policemen were taken to a nearby hospital. The bike and identity card of the nabbed culprit were seized.

While one of the cops is likely to undergo surgery, the other was discharged after treatment.

The police said they would arrest the remaining gang members soon.
