Kid succumbs to polio vaccine

An 11-month old infant has reportedly succumbed to P2-polio virus in a government hospital in Latur on Saturday following vaccination.

Rohit Shelke had apparently got infected from the polio vaccine that is being administered across the nation to make India a polio-free country.

Talking to Deccan Herald from Latur, Dean of Government Medical College Dr Deepti Dongaonkar said: “The case has strong possibilities that the infant was affected by P2-polio virus from vaccine administration.

The infant’s upper body, including head and neck were affected. He developed complications and suffered convulsions when he was admitted to the hospital.

“Though it is too early to zero-down on one particular cause that led to the fulmination of the virus inside the body, we feel that the child developed complications either because the parents did not follow the schedule of polio vaccine administration strictly or the infant had probably very low immunity. Analysis of viscera samples will throw more light on the matter.”
