Accused attempts suicide in court hall

Irfan, 24, facing charges of chain-snatching,  attempted to commit suicide by cutting his throat in front of the judge in the ACMM court on Thursday.

He was rushed to Victoria Hospital and is said to be out of danger.

Irfan, his parents Anwar and Mehrunnisa, his brother Imran and friend Mudafir were allegedly involved in a chain-snatching incident in Subramanyapura. The police arrested them and they were remanded in judicial custody.

The court had reserved the pronouncement of punishment on Thursday. Seeing witnesses in the court, he cut his throat, police said.

Two killed in accident

Two men were killed in separate accidents in the City on Wednesday night. An inebriated biker died in JP Nagar late on Wednesday night, after he lost control over his bike.

The deceased has been identified as Suresh, 23, a resident of Hosakerehalli. The accident when Suresh and a friend, Muniraju, were going home from Jedimara Ring Road, after buying a sack of rice. At 15th Cross in J P Nagar, Suresh lost control of the bike when he attempted to turn sharply to the right. Police said that he first struck a billboard by the side of the road before hitting the road median.

Thrown from his bike by the force of the collision, Suresh sustained severe head injuries. Police said that he was killed on the spot. Muniraju, the pillion rider, who was carrying the sack of rice, suffered injuries to his head and abdomen. He is being treated at Nimhans Hospital and his condition is said to be critical.

A senior police official said that prima facie, Suresh was heavily drunk and was also not wearing a helmet. Jayanagar Traffic police are investigating.

In another incident, a construction labourer was mowed down by a speeding water tanker in Sudhamanagar on Wednesday night.

The deceased was later identified as Selvaraja, 34, a native of Tamil Nadu who was residing in Sudhamanagar. The accident occurred when Selvaraja was going home after work. He alighted from a bus  and was attempting to cross the road when he was run over by a water tanker coming from the opposite direction. According to police, the tanker drove over him, killing him instantaneously.

Indiranagar Traffic police have registered a case. They have seized the water tanker and have arrested the driver Austin, 26. Selvaraja was employed as a construction worker in the City. Police sources said that he had married just six months ago.

Youth assaults constable

Nadeem Ahmed, 23,  a resident of Hosaguddahalli, allegedly assaulted Ramesh, a traffic constable on duty, late on Wednesday night and was arrested by the Sadashivanagar police.

Nadeem and two others, travelling on a bike, entered the one way. They picked a quarrel with Ramesh when stopped. Nadeem assaulted Ramesh who called up the station. Police rushed to the spot and arrested Nadeem, while others fled.
