Neon sarees jazz up the fashion scene

With dull winters on the way out and a fresh, colourful spring upon us, it is time also to light up the wardrobe! Don’t look at solid colours like red, black and maroon anymore but the fashion of the season is ‘neon’.

Runways are flush with neon greens, yellows, pinks, and our B-town divas are also running riot with several neon colours combined in sarees. It’s time you updated your colour palette too!

The trend was heralded by none other than the sveltelicious Priyanka Chopra when she sported a Manish Malhotra neon saree at the Lakme Fashion Week last year. Her lime green sari with a fluoro red border and grey choli stole hearts. It also set off  the fashion of neon sarees with Deepika Padukone donning a similar saree by Arpita Mehta soon, Sonam Kapoor going for one by Manish Arora
and Kajol draping a black saree with neon colour border. Since then, neon colours have come to rule the fashion scene.

Fashion designer Alina Padris of the Get Gorgeous label says, “Neon colour sarees are a must in everyone’s wardrobe now. They look absolutely lovable in fabrics like chiffon, georgette, crepe, tissue etc. The colours add spunk, youthfulness and confidence to your personality while the close drape makes you look even more sexy. Frankly, they have made weddings so much more fun edging out the TV serial-style heavily embroidered nine-yards.”

Looking for the right combination of neon colour sarees and teaming them with equally bright blouses/cholis is a fun exercise by itself. Vinita Mahajan of Sarees Galore says, “You can either have a monotone neon colour saree in bright green, fiery orange, sunshin yellow or electric blue, or go for a saree combining these colours.

It can be paired with a simple silver velvet blouse or even one in tissue or lace. It gives a die-for look.”Neon colour sarees also give you the option of alternating between ethnic and funky personas.

“You can team them with large traditional earrings, a complementing neckpiece and open hair for say, a family occasion, or go for a smaller stud-like earring, wristbands and a high pony for parties. Keep the make-up light so you don’t end up looking like a traffic signal,” says apparel designer Gaurav Kalra.

Whichever way, neon-colour sarees are certainly the brightest fashion innovation in recent times!
