Povamma, Arpinder adjudged the best

Triple-jumper Arpinder Singh set a new national record en route to picking up the best male athlete award as the 54th National Inter-State Senior Athletic Championship came to a conclusion with Kerala expectedly sweeping the overall and team titles here on Sunday.

Punjab’s Arpinder leapt to a distance of 17.17 metres, obliterating Renjith Maheswary’s record of 17.07 set in 2010. The achievement helped Arpinder qualify for Commonwealth Games in Glosgow.

Karnataka’s Poovamma MR, who took the best female athlete award, set a new meet record in the 400 metres after clocking 51.73 seconds, just 0.01 seconds faster than the previous record set by Mandeep Kaur in June 2008.
