Superintendent of Police, Shopian, Shahid Mehraj said, "This incident happened on Tuesday between 7.30 p.m. to 7.45 p.m., when a militant barged into the house of Muhammed Maqbool Mir, who was having dinner with his daughters."
"Mir was asked to mention the names of his daughters and when he pointed to 21-year-old Sheeraza Akhtar, he opened fire shooting her in the chin and abdomen," Mehraj said.

The Shopian SP also said that medical formalities have been completed and investigations are going on.

When asked about the motive of crime, he said, "There are no motives for crime. Every militant has just one motive and that is to spread terror."

Terming the incident as "despicable", Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Farooq Abdullah said in Delhi, "We should condemn the incident and ensure that those, who have done it are brought to justice."

"I think everyone in the world must come together and this is not what we expect. They (the militants) don't believe in human rights, they shout for human rights, and yet they kill whosoever, they want to kill. Is the human rights of that girl not important," the former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister said. When asked, why separatists are silent on the incident, the senior National Conference leader said, "I don't know. That is a question you should ask them, because they shout each time on human rights. Why are they quiet on a subject they should be pondering on. It's a pity that an innocent girl is killed and they don't have a word to say."
Akhtar, a divorcee was killed at her house in Hergam-Keller, 70 kilometres from here.
Four women have been so far killed by unidentified gunmen in Keller this year.
