69 SSLC toppers get desktops

The 107 students at the district level and 627 students at the taluk level, who performed well in the SSLC exams in 2013, will get their desktops along with 741 toppers of SSLC, 2014.

At a function organised by Department of Primary and Secondary Education, on Friday, 35 toppers from Bangalore South and 34 toppers from Bangalore North, were given desktops.

There had been delay of full year in distributing the desktops to the toppers of 2013 due to rise in the prices of desktops during tendering process. As many as 750 desktops were supposed to be handed out. Deccan Herald had reported the issue on May 4.

Since its inception in 2010, this was the only year when the scheme had not faced a problem leading to the delay. As much as Rs 5.8 crore has been spent on the desktops of both the years’ toppers.

A press release issued by KSSEB said the rest of desktops would be distributed to beneficiaries soon.

In 2010 and 2011, the scheme was extended to only top three district toppers and in 2012 it was expanded to include one topper from each taluk. This was further expanded to include three toppers each from district and taluk.

Priyanka G, former student of Government High School, Begur, got 90 per cent in her SSLC 2013. Presently in II PU at Deeksha College, she wants to pursue engineering. “I am extremely honoured and happy that I have finally received the desktop,” she said.

On the question paper leak of Teachers Eligibility Test, Department of Public Instruction Commissioner Mohammed Mohsin, said a proposal to set up a one-man commission headed by regional commissioner of Gulbarga, Amlan Biswas, to probe the incident, had been sent to the government. A conference for parents of students who will be taking the SSLC examination will also be organised at hobli level to stress upon the importance of SSLC exams, KSEEB  Director A Devprakash said.
