Teenager stabbed to death in crowded market

A teenager was stabbed to death by five juveniles known to him in south Delhi’s Ambedkar Nagar on Tuesday. The accused have been apprehended after a security camera revealed footage of the brutal attack, police said on Wednesday.

The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Sachin Singh, who lived with his parents and six sisters in Madangir. His family has a business of construction materials and providing trucks on rent.

Sources said Sachin was the leader of a local gang and the five attackers — all juveniles — were part of the gang. “Being the leader of the gang, he bullied the juveniles for two-three years due to which they decided to eliminate him,” the source added. It is also alleged that Sachin used to scare the juveniles claiming links with criminals lodged in Tihar Jail. “It was Sachin’s tactic to maintain his clout in the gang,” the source added.

According to police, Sachin was on a motorcycle with a friend, a 17-year-old boy, when the incident took place at about 3 pm in Madangir market. The CCTV footage shows the attackers running towards his motorcycle with country-made pistols and knives.

“Without any warning, Sachin was slashed on the neck due to which he lost control over the motorcycle. His friend managed to flee from the spot, but Sachin was stabbed multiple times,” said a police officer.

After being thrown off the motorcycle, Sachin’s friend ran in the opposite direction and was not chased by the attackers. However, Sachin was surrounded and overpowered.

“He was stabbed at least 15 times,” the officer added. Sachin tried to run in all directions, but the attackers kept following him and stabbed him without any mercy. It was only after he fell down, heavily bleeding, that the five boys left the spot. While fleeing, the accused also opened fire in the air.

The incident occurred in a crowded market but nobody went forward to help Sachin or to overpower the attackers. Police took Sachin to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he was declared brought dead. A case of murder under IPC and Arms Act has been filed with Ambedkar Nagar police.
