Ranjeet Singh Kohli alias Rakibul Hassan Khan, who allegedly forced national rifle shooting gold medallist Tara Shahdeo to convert to Islam after marriage was arrested by a joint team of Delhi and Jharkhand police late on Tuesday.

His mother too was arrested in south Delhi’s Dwarka on Wednesday, police said.Police said Kohli had come to Delhi along with his 65-year-old mother Kaushalya Rani alias Kausar Parveen on Sunday. “They were staying at Naseerpur in Dwarka in the house of a man whom Kohli had befriended at a hotel in south Delhi’s Mahipalpur,” said Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) S N Shrivastava.

Kohli told police that he was a Hindu till 2007 when he came in touch with a holy man identified as Arif who converted him to Islam. Arif had asked him to follow Islam properly so he started reading Quran and offering namaz. However, even after changing his religion, Kohli retained his old name.

Police sources said locals in Ranchi knew him by the name Rakibul Hassan Khan as well as Ranjeet Singh Kohli. “Kohli was in touch with many politicians and businessmen in his area and this facilitated his entry into the shooting range where he met Tara, whom he later married,” the source said.
