Godown raided; rice, wheat seized

 Acting on a tip-off, Deputy Commissioner P Rajendra Cholan raided a private godown in old APMC yard in Dharwad on Thursday night and seized rice and wheat meant for distribution under the Anna Bhagya and public distribution system.

The deputy commissioner has also ordered the seizure of a lorry carrying the wheat. Cholan said that over 100 quintals of wheat and 50 quintals of rice worth Rs 15 lakh, from the godown belonging to Sheikh and Company, has been seized. 

Officials found that rice had been taken out from gunny bags bearing government seal, and transferred to new bags.

The godown owner and vehicle driver went into hiding as the deputy commissioner accompanied by the police and officials of Food and Civil Supplies department raided the godown.
