Uttar Pradesh has recorded the fifth highest share of over eight per cent in terms of direct jobs being generated in registered dairy units.

The state has also ranked fifth with a share of about seven per cent in over 1,400 dairy factories across India as of latest available data, an ASSOCHAM study said on Wednesday.

“Besides, with dairy output worth about Rs 7,000 crore, UP ranked third with over 11 per cent share in total dairy output worth over Rs 60,255 crore,” noted a study conducted by Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (AASOCHAM).

“With over 17 per cent share in total milk production of about 121 million tons (MT), UP is ranked on top with over 21 MT milk being produced annually. The state, however, has registered a growth rate of about 16 per cent in milk production which is below the all-India growth rate of about 19 per cent and is ranked 12th,” noted the study.

In terms of per capita availability, UP was ranked on the ninth rung and the state clocked a growth rate of about eight per cent which was again below the All-India growth rate of 12 per cent, the study said.  Concentration of milk production in some pockets has led to rising disparity amid states in terms of per capita milk availability, it added.

“Milk production across India has grown at a significant rate of about 19 per cent during the aforesaid period. But despite being the largest milk producer in the world, per capita milk availability in India at 252 grams falls below the global average of 279 grams per person per day,” said D S Rawat, national secretary general of ASSOCHAM while releasing the chamber’s study.
