An effective garbage disposal system would be in place before December 1, when dumping of waste in Mandur landfill would be completely stopped, said Mayor N Shanthakumari.

Addressing reporters on Thursday, the Mayor said about 4,000 tonnes of waste is generated in the City, of which about 600 tonnes to 650 tonnes from Yelahanka, Mahadevapura and East zone would be sent to Mandur for processing.

“We have directed the officials to make sure that only segregated waste goes to Mandur for processing. The wet waste would go to the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation, S Bingipura, Mavallipura, Lakshmipura, Terra Farma and Maltos for processing,” she said.

Shanthakumari added that for the last 15 days, 400-450 tonnes of waste is being sent to MSGP Infra Private Limited, which has a processing unit of 500-700 tonnes capacity. Along with it, garbage processing units would be set up at seven places in the City, which will be operational in the next three months to rid the City of waste to a great extent, the Mayor said.

She said the Palike is also working towards setting up bio-gas plants at six places having a capacity of at least five tonnes. Shanthakumari added that tenders for garbage disposal in 98 wards would be called shortly.

Appealing for cooperation, Shanthakumari said, “The garbage problem cannot be sorted out unless corporators, officers and the public join hands.”
