Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday said thefts and robberies at ATM kiosks and sexual assaults on schoolchildren are considered to be the failure on the part of the police and the government.
Addressing officials after presenting the Chief Minister’s medals to 75 police officials, the chief minister called upon the police officials to take stern action against criminals who commit such offences.
“Such an act will instil confidence in citizens,” the chief minister said.
Siddaramaiah said though banks and school managements were responsible for the safety of people on their respective premises, the police have a greater role to play in curbing such menace. “Though the police come into the picture only after the crime, it is believed to be a failure on the part of the police and the government.
“The police need to study the psychological condition of the criminals arrested on the charges of sexually abusing children. The punishment should act as a deterrent and also instil fear among such people,” he said.
Lack of proper investigation has led to many acquittals and the police officials should look into this asppect. The police are the guardians of society and they must treat people with compassion, the chief minister said.
