Lakhvi was involved in every stage of 26/11

Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operations commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, who got bail from a Pakistani court on Thursday, was involved in every stage and aspect of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai.

Right from recruiting and planning to selecting targets, overseeing and executing the carnage from November 26 to 29, 2008, Lakhvi handled the whole operation.

Intelligence agencies and the Crime Branch-CID of the Mumbai Police have pieced together his role. Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist who was caught, had also revealed the role of his “mentor” in his confessional statements.

Lakhvi’s name figures second in the list of 35 wanted, after Hafeez Mohammad Saeed alias Hafiz alias Hafiz saab, the founder of Jamaat-ud-Dawa. Lakhvi is the chief operations commander of the LeT known to be one of the “best trainers” in the field of terrorism.

He has a team of sharpshooters, map readers, communication experts and physical trainers. His main trainers are Zarar Shah, Abu al Qama Abu Qahafa, Abu Hamza, Muzammil alias Yousuf and Ibrahim alias Ali. They were involved in training the 10 terrorists who carried out the attacks.

Another of his key aide and trainer is Azam Cheema alias Babaji, who was the key plotter of July 11, 2006 serial train blasts in Mumbai. He is the Bahawalpur-based LeT commander, who doubles up as an ISI operative. He, too, has close links with the Pakistani army.

Kasab had stated in his confession: “There were 32 trainees in the camp. Sixteen were selected for a confidential operation by one Zaki-ur-Rehman, alias Chacha, but three of them ran away from the camp. Chacha sent the remaining 13 with a person called Kafa to the Muridke camp again.”

On training, Kasab said: “‘Amir Hafeez Saed told us that all Mujahideen has to fight for freedom of Kashmir. Then Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi told us that time has come for jihad. For the last 15 years, we are fighting in Kashmir.
