Last Updated 19 December 2014, 20:01 IST

Members of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Standing Committee for Horticulture on Friday found that several water bodies in the City have been encroached upon.

During their inspection of Munnekolala Lake in AECS Layout, the committee members found that the lake measuring 14 acres and four guntas has shrunk due to rampant encroachment. They assured the residents of the Layout that the Palike will carry out eviction drive after the court dispose of the matter pertaining to the encroachment of lake land.

Rs 2.40 crore spent

The committee members said that a total of Rs 2.40 crore has been spent on the development of Munnekolala Lake.

During its visit to the lake, the committee also learnt that only two teams, of the three teams constituted for the upkeep of the waterbody, were found to be working.
The committee later visited Chinnapanahalli Lake at Mahadevapura and Kaigondanahalli Lake at Sarjapura.

The members found that several apartments have come up on the aforementioned lakes. They instructed the authorities concerned to serve notice to apartment dwellers and take appropriate legal action against those who found guilty of violating the norms.

Town Hall renovation

While the members of Horticulture Committee were busy inspecting the lakes in East and South East part of the City, Mayor N Shanthakumari paid a surprise visit to Town Hall, where renovation of the structure is going on.

The Mayor set a new Jan 20-deadline for the completion of work and warned the officials and the contractor that strict action will be taken against them, if they fail to meet the new deadline.

Not amused by the pathetic conditions of cowsheds near KR Market, the Mayor reprimanded the officials and instructed them to address the issue soon.
