Rajkumar Hirani, who shot to fame with Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai, is in limelight again for his latest project, 3 Idiots. Hirani, who was a director and producer of advertising films, got his big break with Mission Kashmir, where he was the film editor.  From then on, he went on to hit the floor, with his first directorial venture Munnabhai MBBS, which  became a cult classic.

Speaking about 3 Idiots, he says, “The movie was very easy to make. We did quite a lot of rehearsals and a lot of script reading was also done. The entire crew helped me out a lot.”

A lot of research was done before they could zero in on IIM-B. “We scanned around 400 colleges and we finally rounded up on IIM-B. The great stone walls were really good and have a dominating effect on screen. Also, I have met some of the finest people in IIM-B. We got a lot of local talent also to act and they were good too.”

He also mentions, “The cast did not want to move out of IIM-B, they all wanted to finish a majority of the shooting there itself. No other place could have been as good as IIM-B.”
Hirani also reveals, “In fact, Aamir did not want to push out of this place. For Kareena’s wedding scene, he wanted to set up the marriage scene in one of the grounds in IIM-B itself.”

About the unique name given to Boman Irani, he says, “We were thinking of giving another name to him because coining different names for professors in college is so famous. We started with Ravan and there were many other names in our list. Finally, we chose Virus. As his original name in the movie is Viru Sahastrabuddhe, we made it Virus in short. Moreover, it’s an engineering college so we thought this is an appropriate name.”

About his passion for movies, he says, “I have no religion but cinema. Any concept is an inspiration for me. I pick up stuff from our daily lives and try to bring it forward. During this process, subconsciously a message comes out.”
