Five debt-stressed farmers end lives

 Five debt-ridden farmers ended their lives across the State on Friday.
A farmer couple attempted suicide at Havanur village in Haveri taluk on Thursday night. The man passed away, but his wife is battling for life.

26-year-old Honnappa G Pujar and his wife, Deepa (Muttavva), are the victims. Honnappa owns four acres of land in his father’s name. The couple used to cultivate cotton and had availed hand loans to the tune of Rs 3.80 lakh.

Unable to repay loans due to crop loss, they tried to end their lives.
While Honnappa passed, away Deepa, who is battling for life, has been shifted to KIMS in Hubballi, for additional treatment.

A farmer from Nookapur Tanda in Ranebennur taluk ended his life on Thursday night. 55-year-old Dyamappa Thakreppa Lamani is the victim. Unable to repay the hand loans he had borrowed from the private moneylenders, he is said to have taken the extreme step. A case has been registered in the rural police station in this regard.

45-year-old farmer Kumarayya Kallayya Mathapathi from Gurlakatti village in Nargund taluk, Gadag district, ended his life on Thursday night.

He had borrowed farm loans to the tune of Rs two lakh. Due to deficient rainfall and failure of crops, he is said to have ended his life. A case has been registered at the Town police station in this regard.

Ningashetty (45) a farmer from Rajashiriyuru near Halebeedu, in Belur taluk, committed suicide by consuming poison, allegedly due to mounting debts and failed crops, on Friday night.

Residents of the village said that he had availed Rs 40,000 loan to raise jowar and sunflower on his three acre farmland.

They said, his total loan exceeded Rs 3 lakh as he had borrowed money to conduct marriage of his two daughters.

As the crops withered due to failed monsoon, he took the extreme step, the villagers said. He is survived by wife Yashodha, three daughters and one son.

A debt-burdened farmer from Tarikere in Kunigal taluk of Tumakuru district committed suicide by consuming unknown poison at his Vaajarapalya farm house on Friday.

Shivaraj (40) had suffered huge losses after his three attempts to drill borewells at his farm failed to yield water. Kunigal police have registered a case of unnatural death and investigations are on.
