Two youths from Chikkamagaluru district, who are working here as drivers, were arrested on Tuesday for raping a BPO employee in a moving vehicle late on Saturday.

“We have arrested the two drivers who raped the BPO employee. Sunil Omkarappa (23) and Yogesh Malleshappa (25) were picked up from HSR Layout on Tuesday around 2 pm,” said Police Commissioner N S Megharik.

Sunil is from S Bidire while Yogesh is from the Sindigere village, both in the Kadur taluk. The duo came to the City three years ago. They have confessed to the crime and the police are interrogating them to ascertain further details.

The top cop said the culprits were in an inebriated state when they offered to drop the victim to her hostel. The vehicle is not attached to any firm and the duo was hired by the owner to ferry passengers in and around Madivala, HSR Layout and Bommanahalli.

So far, the police have not quizzed the vehicle owner, which would reveal whether he had verified the antecedents of the accused before employing them.

It was earlier suspected that one of the culprits was a cleaner and that the victim was employed with a leading BPO firm. Investigations have revealed that the victim was working for a small company with a staff strength of only 15.

Also, the company does not seem to have ensured transport facilities for its employees.
“We will serve a notice to the firm about the violation of safety guidelines, regarding ensuring transport facility to women employees. We will also request the Labour Department to ascertain if there was any violation of the norms,” said Megharik.

The police had a tough time tracing the vehicle registration number. As the route taken by the van on Saturday night did not have CCTV cameras, the police probed the matter based on the victim’s statement using basic policing skills.

The victim has left for Madhya Pradesh and will be summoned to identify the culprits.
