VHP appeals to Sonia on Rajiv's promise

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Friday appealed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi to fulfil promise of her husband Rajiv Gandhi by piloting a legislation in Parliament for construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

Though the controversial Ram temple issue is pending with the Supreme Court and the BJP had earlier said that they do not have requisite numbers to get Parliament nod for such a bill, the VHP insisted on a political solution.

VHP  general secretary (international) Dr Surendra Jain said, “till when can the Hindu community wait since the case will go from a smaller to larger bench and so on”.

“The VHP appeals to all political parties and also to Congress president Sonia Gandhi to bring a legislation in Parliament and let the Modi government help to pass it for constructing the Ram temple. Sonia Gandhi can at least fulfil her husband and former PM Rajiv Gandhi’s wish of bringing Ram Rajya,” Jain told reporters.

In 1989 general elections, Rajiv Gandhi had started his campaigning from Faizabad and I cannot forget his speech in which he had evoked Ram Rajya, Jain added.

With friendly government at the Centre, the VHP since last year had been trying to creating a favourable ambience for construction of temple at the disputed cite. Truck loads of stones have already started arriving at Ayodhya for construction of the temple.
