It takes a bumpy back-breaking two hours ride from Silchar to reach Katigorah — an important junction where national highways lead to Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and parts of Manipur.
This dilapidated 35-km stretch road has not been maintained for decades. It is clear indication of the lack of infrastructure in the region.
During the 2014 Lok Sabha poll campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised the people that if voted to power he would bring a infrastructural facelift and the Centre has put infrastructure development of three districts — Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi — on top priority.
Silchar, the district headquarters of Cachar, has been linked by broad gauge rail network and Indian Railways introduced direct express rail link from Silchar to Kolkata and New Delhi.
“The broad gauge connectivity has been one of the key demands of the people of this region for decades. NDA government completed the work on fast track. Modi has fulfilled one dream. People of Barak Valley have many dreams and for 15 years not a single one was fulfilled by the Congress,” said Amarchand Jain, BJP’s candidate from Hatigorah constituency.
The BJP is promising fast track development in 15 constituencies in the region which is a Congress stronghold since independence.
