Putting their international experience to good use, Kanchan PM and Thasana Chanu emerged champions in their respective categories in the women’s weightlifting competition on the second day of the State Games here on Saturday.

Kanchan and Thasana, both representing Sports Authority of India (Southern Centre), Bengaluru, enthralled the fans here at the University Public School arena with their power and grit.

In the 75-plus kg challenge, Kanchan, who clinched a gold (junior category) in the Commonwealth Championship in Pune in 2015, registered a total of 186 kg (80 kg in snatch and 106 kg in clean and jerk), to bag the gold.

The 21-year-old lifter from Belagavi, who had clinched a bronze in the National Games in 2015, was the crowd favourite. As she completed her third and final clean and jerk attempt, Kanchan’s emotional father, who was watching her daughter perform for the first time, embraced her in joy.

Divyashree of Alva’s college, with a total of 142 (63+79), finished second while Bhavishya of Jai Hanuman, with a score of 140 kg (65+75), claimed bronze.

Chanu, competing in the 63kg category for the first time, won the gold with ease. The 22-year-old Manipuri, a bronze medallist in the Youth Olympics in China in 2014, took the top spot with a total of 181 (77 in snatch and 104 in clean and jerk).

Alva’s College girl Rithika registered a total of 126 (58+68) for silver while the bronze went to Archana of SDM Sports, Ujjire, with a total lift of 110 (50+60).
