City Muncipal Council (CMC) is working on a warfooting to tackle the scarcity of water in Baje reservoir. The water available in the dam is sufficient only for 14 days. CMC executive engineer K Ganesh told DH that water level at Baje reservoir is 3.44 meters while the level of water in the reservoir at the same time last year was 4.60 metres. If water is pumped daily, then the water will be sufficient for only 14 days. All attempts are made to manage the available water for the next 70 days, which seems to be a Herculean task.

He said that water in the upper stream in Shiroor reservoir is sufficient for 10 to 12 days. The administration is now contemplating on taking up the dredging at Shiroor downstream. Last year, the dredging in the area offered water for 22 days. The engineer said that the dredging will be taken up by Thursday or Friday. The dredging will be considered at Mane Bridge, which is the downstarem of Shiroor bridge. The water will be pumped from the little pools to jack well.

At present, the water course connecting each pool has not been cut off. Once the connection is lost, the pumping of the water will be taken up. The pumping will begin from the pool where the link flow is stopped, he added.

He said that around 11 tankers of various capacities are pressed into the service to supply water to the residents in the affected wards. The water bodies at Malpe, Kodankuru and Doddanangudde is used for the tanker water service. Some elevated areas have not been receiving water as the pumping of water is reduced to 12 hours unlike earlier 24 hours. There is requirement of 24 MLD water, however at present the water received is 12 MLD, he added.

The tanker water is offered to some parts of Udupi town, Mission Compound, Ambalpadi, Bailur, Badagabettu, Marpalli railway station area, Chitpadi, Duglipadav, Indrali, Ananthnagar 1st stage and 2nd stage and Hudco Colony, Vidyaratnanagar, Eshwaranagar, Saralabettu, Nehru Nagar, Perampalli Church area, Doddannagudde, Santhoshnagar, Subramanyanagar, Kodavur, Kalmadi and Gopalpura.
