The Madras High Court on Tuesday asked the Tamil Nadu government not to open liquor shops along the highways for three months, thwarting alleged efforts to reopen them.
Following the Supreme Court order to close down liquor vends along state and national highways, the AIADMK government has been forced to shut 3,450 shops resulting in the loss of Rs 10,000 crore for the exchequer.
The state government has been controlling the liquor business and has been using proceeds to fund freebees, which would be severely hit if the liquor sales were to stop.
