'Quality is more relevant than quantity'

Last Updated 25 May 2017, 18:48 IST

Music composer Rochak Kohli is known for the popular song ‘Paani Da Rang’ from ‘Vicky Donor’. He has also delivered hits like ‘Saadi Gali’ and ‘Atrangi Yaari’.

The artiste recently released his song ‘Tashreef’ from the upcoming film ‘Bank Chor’. In a tete-a-tete with Anushree Agarwal, Rochak talks about his inspiration, future projects and more.

How has your journey been so far?
My journey, both as a musician and in Bollywood, has been fantastic. I’ve not been able to release too many songs, because I believe that quality is more relevant than quantity.

One of your most challenging projects till now...
I worked on a film called ‘Hawaizaada’. Though it didn’t do very well, I got a lot of experience on how to move with the script and score music accordingly.

An actor you’ve enjoyed working with the most.
I am being biased because he’s my friend but I love working with Ayushmann Khurrana. He’s very musically evolved and understands the finer nuances of the art.

Who inspires you the most?
A R Rahman Sir; he’s the reason I bought my first cassette (‘Dil Se’) out of my own pocket money. After listening to him, I decided that music is something I am going to pursue throughout my life. He also inspired me to break my boundaries and to think of music which is 10 years ahead of the time.

Music to you is...
Peace and value.

A few songs that you admire..
In Hindi, it’s ‘Agar Tum Saath Ho’ from Tamasha. Internationally, I am fond of Coldplay and Chainsmokers. I also like Ed Sheeran’s ‘Photograph’.

And what about ‘Shape of You’?
It’s a wonderful song and the world’s favourite right now. However, we may think it’s easy but it’s simpler melodies like these that are most tough to crack.

What do you do for leisure?
I recently discovered my interest for travelling. I also love cooking; am a learner’s chef and my friends are my guinea pigs over the weekend!

What are you working on now?
I am working on Nikhil Advani’s film ‘Lucknow Central’; Irrfan Khan’s next ‘Kareeb Kareeb Single’; Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s next production and probably also on ‘Bazaar’.

An advice to young musicians venturing into Bollywood...
It’s not an easy place to be in. Come into it only if you’re really serious about it and make up your mind that you’re not going to step back. Then the industry will open its arms for you.
